@GlennRoxWyo obviously navi-speak is based of something, but im pretty sure its its a con-lang, created by Paul Frommer

btw, klingon is based off turkish and mongolian

@Kalahridudex Sorry wrong on both points. In Avatar they speak Navajo with very few deviations. Marc Okrand created Klingon based on Greek & latin grammatics & language.

Excellent critique of the political-fouls in Avatar. I personally wanted the indigenous creatures to die, just so they’d shut up about their culture.

I’ll say it again, hidden in “Avatar” is anti-American ohthe poor American Indians who where robbed of their lands message. Even the Alians language was Navajo. I’m suprised yoou didn’t mention that Lee.

I think Avatar had a clear ethnopluralistic message, even though I’m sure James Cameron didn’t want to portray it as such. Still, you can’t escape that “the
Blues” (can’t remember their real name) valued themselves, their ancestors, their culture, etc, very high and that this is portrayed as a good thing.
Of course, for any leftist, this can’t be translated into that pride in your ethnic and cultural heritage should be a good thing for all groups, but be exclusive for “the oppressed” groups.

Also movies like “The Postman” “Water World” ….. Cowboys and Indians theme.
You really cant deny the quality of this film though. DVD is not out yet, but someone leaked an amazing quality copy on torrent. 2.13GB

Nah, close–they’d be portrayed as barbaric goons who couldn’t care less about environmental issues, prey on the weak, and attack civilians indiscriminantly. A more apt description of reality, in other words, which Hollywood could never bear to show; it would require too much fairness ;)

Avatar was a very nice movie; plot could use some work though :/ (it kept reminding me of Dune and starcraft for some reason)

    I personally liked District 9 better :P

I guess in a “rightist” movie the natives would be portrayed as ungrateful nuisances for not accepting to be uprooted from their homes in order for a company to profit from things buried under their lands.

I find it curious that you name it as a “leftist” movie. I’m not necessarily contesting that, but….I’d like to know what would exemplify a “rightist” movie.
Pains me (a lot) to say this, but I agree with the bespectacled pissy nerd on this one. I hope I never have to go through this again. It hurt.

Avatar was so frustrating, because there were so many good spots for interesting moral dilemmas. What if the mineral that the militant’s were after was something medically valuable and it could save thousands of human lives? What if Jake had to keep lying to the Na’vis in order to save them?

But it was all black and white, and that always makes a horrible film no matter what the “white” side is trying to manifest. and especially when it is the blatant “natural = good and justified” ideology.

politics in america are getting really stupid. the majority of left leaning americans are not happy with Obama because he is a not far enough left and the right hate him cause he isn’t reactionary.

In response to Schwarzenegger’s spending vs. businesses and jobs leaving the state, Oregon just passed a higher level of taxation for Oregon businesses, which is ironic because Oregon has the second-highest unemployment in the nation. With the new taxes, the mayor of Chicago wasted no time in trying to lure businesses away from Oregon. While they may not choose to move to Chicago, I think it is reasonable to be concerned about job losses here….socialist policies work so well.

I would be really surprised if Avatar does not win oscar for best picture/director award.
